HEPA filters in the furnace and vacuum sweeper are very effective, however, there is no 'official' standard for calling something 'HEPA', so you have to pay attention to the details when looking at HEPA products.

If you do an internet search for filter and allergies, all sorts of choices will pop up.

The effectiveness of air filters is debatable. Some people swear by them, and the people who sell them make all sorts of health claims. On the other side of the fence, groups that test these products like researchers, EPA, and Consumer Reports, find some filters actually increase pollutants by adding ozone to the air, and even the best filters provide only moderate reductions in particulates. Dust mites are one of the biggest causes of indoor allergies, and air filters don't affect mites. This link has a good review of options (requires Adobe reader):

Arm and Hammer sells a great furnace filter. I buy mine at wal-mart. My son has allergies and I noticed a difference since I've started using them.
