I'm almost 7 months pregnant now. My 9 yr old daughter and I were at the book store. We sat down to look at the books that caught our attention. Of course I was looking at a pregnancy book and she asked me where does the baby come out. She's never seen an actual childbirth on TV or in person for that matter, so in the most simplest of terms I told her that a baby comes out of the woman's "privates". She didn't believe me, then she asked where exactly down there. I explained where vaginal canal was located and attempted to decribe it unsuccessfully. She thought I was referring to where #2 comes out.
After that I promised that I would find a good book that would assist me in explaining all of this to her, because I wasn't doing a very good job obviously and I did not want to confuse her any further. This is is the reason I've come here today to ask you, how do you explain all of this in a way a child can understand it?

I'm right there with you!! My daughter is also nine years old and asking all of those same questions.
Here's what I did with my daughter. Being a nurse, I brought home some body charts that show the body and explained what each reproductive thing was......in words that she would be able to understand. And then I told her "mommy and daddy" made a baby and that it was growing inside my womb, which is a womans special place, made just to grow babies. And I went to the bookstore and bought a book that was age appropriate for her to read. There are a lot of them out there.
Good luck.

You should have been explaining these types of things to her all along. I'm the mother of 5 and believe that there isn't just one talk that you have with your children. There is a great book called Where Did I Come From that may be a little below her age level but it explains things about how babies are made very well.

Let her watch it on tv. She will be hitting puberty very soon, and when puberty hits, so does the tendency to become sexually active. Let her watch it on TV, that way she will not only be absolutely sure of where they come out, but she will also be wary of whether or not she wants to have a kid in the near future. It sounds kinda harsh, I know, but the shock treatment may give her a view she won't be able to get if her friends describe it to her.
Otherwise, (I'd hate to put this one in, because of its content) "The baby comes out of the same place a man's tools go in during intercourse..."

My daughter is still asking these questions and she is almost 12. She started asking at about 5yrs. We have looked at books and deliveries on cable. Your actually in a really good position to let her see it first hand. If you and your Doctor are not opposed to having her in the delivery room, let her watch. Unless your the type to that really screams and yells. We don't want to discourage her from having her own someday! It's a great way to show her what you did to bring her in to this world. And hopefully she, like my daughter will be in no hurry to start her own family.

Go to the library and get a good book one is Your body Your self but there are others. Also on tv is a good show that shows babies being born you could watch that with her. As far as puberty goes you can say how the difference between her and you as far as physical difference and how she will have breasts and body hair when she gets older.

Tell her the truth, as simple as possible. Dont be too graphic, but tell her it happens when a girl matures into a woman, and her body is strong enough to hold the baby and push it out of her " privates " or if you have a really good dr, aske him/her to help you explain it to your daughter.
GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!

You may find something at your local public library -- just ask the children's librarian for assistance. They get asked this all the time.
Also, with puberty approaching, that talk will be next...this book has been on my amazon wishlist for awhile because I'll be buying it for my own daughters soon. It looks like it will be helpful:
