But, what if you can't get to some protein right away, what can you get on the run that is a sufficient amount (at least 25g)?

It is best if you take whey protein isolate right after you workout. I take a shaker cup with protein powder in it with me to the gym. Right after my last set, I add water, shake it up, and drink it down. This is much better than waiting until you get home.

This will explain the importance of getting your protein on time.

From wholefoods, I will eat some salmon after my work-out sometimes (3.5 oz of salmon can give you 27g of protein). Other foods I take: skim milk, yogurt, egg whites, chicken brests, whey protein isolates, beans, etc after a workout.

Or, if you cannot prepare a shake or have an appointment following, how about amino acids in capsules or tablets, it's handy just pop some of them right after your lifting, there should be a water machine in the gym.

Another alternative is the protein bar, but it's hard to get a decent one, read the label very carefully before you buy. Don't worry too much, it's OK to have your shake a little bit later than usual (within an hour is OK).
