A very good, well posited and very valid question. If I may be permitted I'd like to answer this from a Buddhist perspective to provide some insight into the Buddhist concept of Action and Consequence which is given the general term Karma.
In Life we are given choices to make in all our interactions with other Life. These choices have consequence either immediately, in the future or the far future, depending on the nature of the choice and the circumstances of its use. Further, these consequences are either in a positive sense, negative sense or neutral sense determined by our intention and mind set at the time of the choice.
These consequences are generally resolved immediately, but in some cases such as the choice of murder or suicide etcetera, the consequences are far reaching and very serious indeed. At the moment that we die, there is generally unresolved consequences still outstanding if you will and these outstanding consequences will be therefore felt in our next Life if we are to be reborn....do you follow so far...?
We as humans are subject to the cycle of Life which involves Birth, through Life, to death. At death if our negative Karma has not been resolved then our final consciousness is transfered and linked to our next existence and we are Reborn. During the process, our compliment of 5 Parts are dissolved and then reformed in different measures as a consequnce of Karma and Rebirth occurs. The link is generally made as a consequence of Karma and if it is very negative then a more negative existence is linked..follow now..?
Peace my friend a good question..from a Buddhist.in the season of joy..

That's a great question. I've read theories that we choose the life (or quality of life) that we will experience when we are in heaven. I've read other theories that the experiences in our lives is the result of 'payback' (or karma) of the things we've done in a previous life (or lives).
This is a great question because it really does seem that some people experience overwhelmingly difficult lives, while other people experience relatively easy lives. It's all about perception though. What may seem like hell to one person might seem like a walk in the park to someone else.

I think you are thinking of karma. Karma is, as I understand it, the spiritual equivalent of cause and effect, which does not experience time in the way that physical cause and effect does. For example, if you are to hit someone and cause pain, karmic cause and effect says you must experience pain of a similar sort, in order to balance out your action. However, you might not experience this 'reaction' until after being reborn into a later life. Therefore, when we perform many bad deeds in a life, yet there are not many bad things done to us in that life, we must experience the bad things in a later life.
I hope that clarifies it a bit.

It all depends on how u lived youre past life because God is just and so for example if in the past life you criticized and hated gay people whell in this life you're most likely going to be gay to see what it feels like. If u think men are superior than woman than in next life u're going to be born in a place were they discriminate woman and be born as on. what goes around comes around. best believe that. u only get what u give. give love u get love.

in whos eyes are they unfortunate ?
i just lost my dad last year , my mother has just had a stroke , my husband is ill ..... i could go on
my mother has had a really hard life by anyones standards and you know what she said to me yesterday ?
she said ... i am really blessed
because she sees what she has now , she looks to the future and is positive
i am sure that there are many many people in this world that others would look upon as being unfortunate ... but you ask them and i bet they will say the same as my mum

I do believe in karma but mostly life is the outcome of the choices that we make rather than of events in a previous incarnation.

Karma. They did something in a past life to give them the life they have now, or they did something in this one.

No, there is no such thing as reincarnation. We all have things happen in our lives that are unfortunate. God did not promise us a perfect life. If we trust in God, He will see us through.
