I am a single mother, I have been recieving daycare assistance from the state of michigan while I work part time, but recently found out that after 3 years I am approved for social security due to a mental illness I have, my social worker has told me that childcare assitance is only available for working, and not school? I am no longer working but starting school next week, and will be attending one day a week for now, I am wondering if I qualify for any kind of childcare assistance while just attending school? if not I'll have to pay $35 a week, for just the one day, and even more when I decide to take more classes... Thanks for any info!

I think you should check into that because here in Indiana you do get free child care when you working or going to school. Maybe you're over the income guideline for recieving assistance. How old is your child? Where I live we have free preschools( if you meet the requirements) If your child is at least 3 you can also check into that. You also may not be eligible because you don't require enough time for childcare because you're only going to school one day a week and not working.

In VA this is the case. You can recieve day care assistance for work, not for shcool unless you combine work and school. If you are getting SSI and possibly child support, you may be over the income limit. I would say that your child care case worker is right. You can look for child care that is based on a sliding scale system or for a private tuition program but may have a delay in enrollment as the wait list will be long. The system is set up to getyou to work, not so much to go school. It is frustrating but that is the reality.

DHS DOES have a program that pays daycare while u are in school (I had it).. I went to school full time and worked part time while they did it. Also DHS thru dept of rehab has a program that will help with tuition and books..u can still get aid.. ur caseworker doesn't know what she's talking about.. I get assistance with both of these. Also, be sure to check out food stamps, etc.

In the state of IL, school also counts for daycare assistance I am sorry that Michigan isn't the same. If you are worried about the cost of daycare, maybe if you have any family or friends that you trust to watch your child while you are in school that would save money.

I am not sure about Michigan but in texas they have a program called ccds through your workforce center that provides full childcare while you attend school and they give you 5000$ per semester to help with living expenses and rent. Check with your Workforce Center.

That does not sound correct. I would contact to social service office you applied for childcare from and request a review of the decision. Make sure its in writing because then they legally have to do it. IF they deny it then the letter should give you the option to appeal.
