I am a single mother, I have been recieving daycare assistance from the state of michigan while I work part time, but recently found out that after 3 years I am approved for social security due to a mental illness I have, my social worker has told me that childcare assitance is only available for working, and not school? I am no longer working but starting school next week, and will be attending one day a week for now, I am wondering if I qualify for any kind of childcare assistance while just attending school? if not I'll have to pay $35 a week, for just the one day, and even more when I decide to take more classes...

Thanks for any info!

That may not be true chek with her supervisor and see if she's right . Title 20 is set up for working or attending school. I get hours on my voucher for school and Im on welfare. How old is the kid if hes 3 and up he can qualify for some type of headstart program. If not pick up a parttime job paying nothing that wont effect ur SSI. My cousin recieves SSI for Sickle Cell . And she works on campus cleaning up. Nothing else use one of ur refund cheks to pay for daycare.

Maybe u should move down here to Cincinnati Ohio we have all kinds of programs. Jus kidding .

In VA this is the case. You can recieve day care assistance for work, not for shcool unless you combine work and school. If you are getting SSI and possibly child support, you may be over the income limit. I would say that your child care case worker is right. You can look for child care that is based on a sliding scale system or for a private tuition program but may have a delay in enrollment as the wait list will be long. The system is set up to getyou to work, not so much to go school. It is frustrating but that is the reality.

DHS DOES have a program that pays daycare while u are in school (I had it).. I went to school full time and worked part time while they did it. Also DHS thru dept of rehab has a program that will help with tuition and books..u can still get aid.. ur caseworker doesn't know what she's talking about.. I get assistance with both of these. Also, be sure to check out food stamps, etc.

Try calling your local Department of Human Services and asking about a Transitional Employment Assistance program. It may not be called exactly that but they should have a program like it. It will pay for daycare while you go to school, and maybe a bit of money for yourself and your child.

good luck!

You should be able to apply for some child care assistance through your local Social Services.
