Protein(s) are strings of amino acids (which are compounds found in many cells in our body, even dna). There are many different types, differentiated by the "r" groups on one side of the chain. They are structural/functional components in almost all areas of the body, especially muscles, tendons and ligaments, and skin (collagen, which helps keep skin elastic). It is essential to eat a lot of protein if you are growing (as it goes into our body parts), when you are going to the gym (as growing muscles). So children and teenagers, training adults need a lot of protein. Adults also need it as it is essential for maintenence of the body, as old cells die and are replaced with new cells. The same goes for old age. Protein cannot be stored by the body, and is not easily stored as fat, so you must have a steady intake of protein to stay healthy. Also due to this, it fills you up and helps keep you from obesity! Excess protein, as it cannot be stored, is broken down by the liver and filtered by the kidneys as urea, which goes into urine. Too much protein may overload your liver/kidneys though, so dont eat too many steaks a day/
