An academic reference is a reference or recommendation from a professor or teacher that has tought you in a class. It should be someone from whom you received a good grade. You either list the person's contact information, or if the application requires, you have to call the person you intend to use as a reference and request a written recommendation. You should ask them if it is okay to list them as a reference.

A reference that you use in an essay for example. To be academic it has to be from an academic journal, text book or other 'peer reviewed' source. Basically it has to be academically sound and reviewed by other academics.
