I've met Dan. He's a real asshole.

I don't think I'd go out of my way to hurt his feelings by telling him he's not funny, but I generally just react to things as the situation warrants... that is, if he says something, cracks up laughing and you do NOT think it's funny, just stare at him with a nice, "what the h*ll are you laughing at" kind of expression.

Now if he aspires to be stand-up comedian funny and he's not, heck, just be an encouraging friend. He'll find out soon enough whether or not he really IS funny.

If he is your friend, you do not have to strain the relationship by telling him negative things. If Dan tells you a particularly unfunny joke, you could ask,"Do you think that joke is funny?" He may answer, "Yes." Then you can say, "Well, I don't." and explain why that particular joke isn't funny to you. This is much more diplomatic then just saying he isn't funny.

smile, be polite, but don't encourage. sometimes people have a tragically terrible sense of humor, but it's not our place to take care of that for them. Unless of course, you are related or something. If my husband says something completely inappropriate in the attempt to be funny. I will say something, and say it right then, to keep the other person from being offended or hurt.
But friends? the only way you can safely handle that is if they say offensive things trying to be funny. Then you can say something like "why would you say that?"
but if your dealing with a lack of humor, smile, and leave it alone. It's a peaceful life we want, not the impossible task of changing everyone to suit our tastes.

Just let him have his fun, some people may think he is funny, to some extent. If it keeps "Dan" in a cheerful disposition..... let him be.

Don't do anything, he'll figure it out soon enough if its true. If you're intent on getting in your two cents worth, you can tell him how you feel.
But, saving him embarrasment won't really be "saving" him at all. Let nature take its course.

Nothing. If you care about him, you won't want to hurt his feelings. If he asks you, you can diplomatically share your opinion.
