What a joy when you can retire the sippy cup! I hated looking for the matching lids, so when my kids were ready to hold a cup on their own without spilling it instantly (3-4years), the first thing I did was throw out the lids. They still got to use their panda bear or giraffe cup but no lid. This is helpful when they do drop the cup it won't break because it's still a plastic sippy cup. The real joy came when I did away with all plastic cups in my cabinet a few years later. 18 months is too young to give it up I think. Hang in there.

With my first child I let her keep the sippy cup until she thought she was too big for them (I think she was about 3 1/2). With my second child I got him use to drinking out of a regular cup and staying in the kitchen / dining area at the age of 2. He's 4 now and I let him use a sippy cup only when we are in the car. The cup he likes has a straw that comes out of the top and is insulated.

I stopped using the sippy cup by 2. I took the lids off and threw them away. I didn't want my daughter walking and drinking from it like it was a bottle which is what happens and we let them because it doesn't spill. Just make sure she is sitting at a table or high chair give her a small cup or use use the sippy cups with the lids off. Like anything else they need to keep doing it and they will get better at it.
I do remember getting the plastic cups with lids and straws. I used that inbetween the sippy and regular cups.

I offer a sippy cup when my daughter was 3 months lots of help from my. my 9 months we used only sippy cups, and during meals at 9 months I offer a reagular cup. same size as a sippy. I would holw it and soon my girls would hold it help hold it. By one year we were only doing cups or juice boxes with straws. We have had a few spills kids will be kids.
I would try with meals offer a real cup. Then once they get that down. Just only give real cups. Good luck

My girls used sippy cups until about 3/4 years old. But they only used them when away from a table. At the table they had regular cups to drink from. I went from traditional sippy cups to the straw ones when they new how to suck from the straws.... I will admit though, the regular sippy cups are easier to clean and don't have inside straws to worry about.

my son quit drinking from sippies when he was a little over two. e pretty much did it on his own. i bought him a couple of big boy straw cups ( not the sippy kind with a straw ) and he loved them so much that he didn't want a sippy anymore. plus he started drinking from normal cups pretty early b/c he always wanted what mom and dad were drinking. he still spills sometimes, but he has to make a mess to learn. i can't believe some of these answers. five or six!? do you want your kid going to kindergarten still drinking from a sippy? that's crazy. let her practice in the bathtub with a normal cup. and give her something yummy so that she will want to drink it. at that age when i gave my son water in the tub he would just pour it out.

Let her practice with a regular cup with only water in the bathtub or outside. Once she has mastered a regular cup she will likely give up her sippy cups by herself.

My son just turned 3 and he still uses one in the car and when he wants water at night in his bed, less spills, is really a lot nicer. As far as for meals he drinks from a cup. I see nothing wrong with using a sippy less spills!

It's up to you really. I used sippy cups until my kids were four just because they are so careless and also spilling on accident. they were able to drink from a regular cup around two years of age by themselves but knocking the cup over is another story.
