hello, I'm learning English as my second language.
I always thought that thank you is more polite than thanks, because thanks is too short, which is only 6 letters, some lazy people like to use it.
Am i right?

'Thank you' is more polite than 'thanks'. 'Thanks' should be used only in informal circumstances. If somebody saves your life, you would want to say 'Thank you' at the very least. 'Thanks' just would seem almost flippant.

By the way, in America, 'thank you' IS more polite than 'thanks', contrary to what one answerer wrote. I know this first-hand, as I am an American.

No, it's not. One is more formal and one is more casual - both accomplish the same task (the expression of appreciation) and are equally polite. It's more about knowing what situation to use each one in.

In conversation the measure of politeness comes more from how the word is used then exactly what is said. True appreciation is expressed in the tone of voice more then in the words said (I'd rather have someone say "thanks" meaningfully then "thank you" sarcastically.

When it comes to written word, however, Thank-you does tend to have a more polite aspect to it, mainly due to its formality.

Thank you is more formal. Especially in formal letter-writting such as resume, request letter.

Thanks usually to friends or informal situations.

"Thank you" is definitely more formal and polite than "thanks" and as a personal note, I always try to say "thank you" instead.
