He has been coughing pretty bad and has a runny nose. He says his throat hurts but I'm not totally sure if it does or if he is just saying yes to everything that I ask him. He's been pickier about eating and drinking, so I think it's a good possability.

I've given him cold/allergy medication but he hasn't seemed to get any better, plus it's very diffacult to get him to take it at all anyway.

What are some things I an do to help him to feel better and maybe get over this quicker?

My sister has kids, and she swears by Delsym when they are coughing a lot. Also she says Mucinex is great too, but her kids are a bit older, so be sure to check the age requirements.

He has a virus that is going around. It will last about a week. The fever normally starts around second or third day. It is ok if your child does not eat. Let your child sleep as much as he can and push fluids. warm tea help breaks up anything in his chest and lungs. You can go to the dollar store and try medicine that will help w/ fever and coughing. Keep him cool. Even if he says hes cold. Keep underwear and maybe a loose tshirt on him. A light blanket and the place cool. If he gets to warm hes going to cough more and could cause him to throw up b/c of coughing. It will pass. Good luck...your in for a long week with no sleep at night. That is when it's worse have him staying sitting/prop up

With strep throat its common to have a temp 100-102 degrees. Also pressure in his ears from the cold can cause confusing pain.
I would buy some Vicks Vapor Bath.... great for clearing the nose and helps the lungs, cools the cough. I would also have a Vicks Vaporizer w/the solution for it running in his room or what ever room hes in at all times.
I would also contact a doctor and have them examine your son.

There are these Lolly-pops that my husband found at Wal-Mart when our 3yr old was congested w/runny nose cough last month that worked great. She likes Lolly-pops, and they had something in them that made like cough drops. They helped her feel better, plus she got to have a Lolly-pop when ever she wanted. Most of the drug stores and groceries carry these. They should be in the cold/flu meds. aisle.

I have the same trouble with my 2/12 year old daughter. I try everything to get her to take medicine when she is feeling sick, but nothing works. I even tried putting it in her milk or juice, she knows. Try giving him Popsicles, and little bits of food throughout the day. ( Lots of hugs and kisses )works great. If you find that he is crying a lot when trying to eat or drink you should take him to get things checked out. I hope this helps.

A cold, being a virus, has to run its' course. The best treatment is rest and liquids. Check temperature and feel for swollen glands on the throat. If you have access to one, a cool mist vaporizer helps a lot. Just run it in his room, not in his face.

To get him to take the medicine I've mixed it with juice. I also have an oral syringe for giving medicine in his mouth. I squirt it back inside a cheek and it goes down. I would def. take him to a doctor if you can. He may need an antibiotic. That would clear it up in a week or so.

There are saline drops that be put in his nose to help clear the stuffiness. Getting his sinuses clear will probably help with the throat and cough too.

If at all possible, I would suggest just taking your son to a pediatrician, especially since the treatment you've tried at home doesn't seem to be working - and since this is flu season.
