Both can be aggressive dogs-in my area a couple of years ago a little girl was killed by 2 rottweilers while she was playing at a friend's house. But the killing had a lot to do with how the dogs were being treated. Dobies tend to be fear biters. If I had to chose I would probably go with a dobie. But I wouldn't want either breed.

If you are planning on buying a dog-go to a well known reputable breeder, preferably with German lines. Check out local kennel clubs. Also make sure that the parents are OFA certified-meaning that their hips are not prone to dysplasia. If the OFA certification is not available-run don't walk away from the breeder. Hip dysplasia is painful for the dog and very expensive to treat. Trust me its worth the extra money for the puppy. Make sure that you at least are able to meet the mother-to judge her temperament, etc. Sometimes its not always possible to meet the father as he may have been sired out by another breeder. The mother's owner needs to provide you with the info on the father and the owner. I would contact them-try to meet the father-if possible.

For what purpose. Like, for protection of your home/property, or good with kids, etc? I have had experience with both, and both can be very gentle, or very nasty. It largely depends on how they are raised. Dobermans have a bad rap for being a mean type of dog, but this is not entirely true. They are very smart and take very well to training, so they can easily be taught to be a "junk yard dog" like seen in the moves. On the flip side they also take very well to obedience training. One of the most gentle, well behaved dogs I ever met was a Doberman.

I have also known quite a few Rottweilers that were very gentle, love-bugs underneath their gruff appearance. Most (not all) I have known were good for being a "watch dog", i.e., they will bark at an intruder, and probably scare them off. But if an intruder proceeds with a milk bone or a pat on the head, well, then say goodbye to your stereo,or whatever.

Overall I would say both make an excellent pet. If you can't decide, perhaps you should get some books from the pet store, or talk to people who own those types to see what their opinion is.

I am just amazed and horrified at how many people who have absolutely no knowledge about dogs have answered this question.
First off, no dog breed is 'better' than another. Second, ANY dog can become aggressive and all dogs will benefit from obedience training.
I have two dobermans trained in obedience and agility. They are the smartest and most loving dogs I have ever known. Every dog needs to be trained and socialized. They are protective and they would be aggressive if someone attacked me or broke into the house, but they do not deserve the labels that some have placed on them.

The question could not be answered whether you not specify what you need the dog for. If you need a guard a Rottweiler should really do the job but you have to know that Rottweilers get really emotional with their owners and they will do everything to protect their owner..
Dobermans are really good guards but become selfish if you not look over them...

I have had a Rottweiler, and he was not very aggressive, he was soo sweet but he ran away! My best friend has a Doberman and he also isnt very aggressive, they have young children. I would maybe say a Doberman because of all the great things I've seen and heard.

The Doberman is an active, cunning dog which bonds closely and is brave, intelligent, a good guard dog, loyal, dependent, occasionally nosy and boisterous. It has tremendous stamina. Doberman’s have a tendency to become extremely loyal to one particular person.

The Rottweiler is intelligent, obedient, unconditionally loyal to its handler and family, and is vigilant, protective, brave, strong, imposing. It can be jealous. A Rottweiler will defend its family and property to the end. Most of them have a tendency to become loyal to one person.

to me a doberman. there better lookin. and they dont have prey drive like rottis. rottis go after animals that are smaller than them. and bite alot.

I've had both and love them equally. The one advantage to a Doberman is that they shed less. I don't recommend either for someone who isn't an experienced owner, as there can be a serious problem if they're not properly trained.

Rottweiler,

I had 3 and all of them, I say all of them where awesome,
I moved and was forced to leave them behind, I was heartbroken!

Rottweilers are family dogs (if they are trained to be)
and they are just to lovable and play in a wonderfully cute way

I have 5 dobermans ranging from 10 wks to 12 yrs of age. None have ever been aggressive, never bitten anyone, and certainly haven't "snapped out" on me, my husband or either of our children!

I do like rottweliers, but I've never met a female rotti I could trust though.

BONNIE: THANK YOU!
