Lilith, there really is no best answer. I'm curious as to what the doctrines of other faiths have to say. The "best answer" is whoever wins when I go, "enie, meanie, minie, moe"

In Judaism, one must repent and make amends for sins. Only after that can one ask God for forgiveness. When sinning against God, one must also repent and vow not to sin again before receiving God's forgiveness. The Hebrew God is a forgiving God. His punishment is short and appropriate to the sin. No one receives eternal damnation.

Wiccans, like myself, follow the Rede and the Three-Fold Law.

The Rede states, "An It Harm None, Do As Ye Will."

The Three-Fold Law. This is the belief that any harm or good that a Wiccan does comes back to hurt or benefit them -- magnified three times over.

Unlike religions that contain lists of laws, the outcome of an action is obvious to a Wiccan. It is based in cause and effect with the ultimate "choice" being the sole purview of the Wiccan practitioner. Consequently, great thought to either benefit or harm is exercised by followers of Wicca with the result being, it is a highly moral and ethical path.

Atheist -- guilty conscience, having to make amends, having to look the person I've hurt in the eyes and saying I'm sorry, if my actions were criminal then I may face imprisonment or in some countries even the death penalty (depending on the nature of the crime).

Of course, only the last one there is really a 'punishment'. The rest are just consequences really.

We are presently being punished. Living in this planet is our punishment. Here there are miseries in the form of birth, disease, old age and death. Also there is constant anxiety and fear. There are other planets where the living conditions are worse and those that are better. But the above mentioned miseries are present in all of them to a higher or lesser degree. This material world can not be "fixed". It is meant to be that way. We need to get out of here and go to a place in the spiritual realm called "Vaikunta" which means "free of anxiety" where there is no miseries.

I'm a Reincarnationist. There is no "punishment" for punishment's sake, period. There is only enlightenment, learning a life lesson, putting a light of understanding within the spirit where a spot of darkness had been. All karma is constructive in the long term, all of it is own our choice, as we can learn only through the exercise of free will and through reciprocity of the free will of others.

My own guilt and conscience, the pain I cause others, and whatever the law throws at me if I get caught. I'm an atheist. Cheers!

The threefold law. What you send out will come back to you three times over, so you'd better be sure you aren't sending out negativity unless you want your life to suck.

People of the old testament were judged by the laws.

We are in the new testament and will be judged by our concience.

we still need to follow the law of God but that's not what we will be judged by.

All have sinned and have fallen short of Glory of God. We all need a savior, Jesus is mine. A person who doesn't receive Jesus as savior goes to hell for punishment.
