If you have been seperated for the last six months of the year, your spouse is not a member of your household, and if the household is the principal place of abode for a child for whom you are entitled to a dependency exemption - - - then you may claim Head of Household status.

Head of Household status has a more tax favorable standard deduction than the Married filing Seperate does. In addition, the tax tables used to calculate federal income tax are more favorable with the Head of Household.

Obviously, you'll be claiming the dependent(s) and receiving an exemption for each one plus there is a possibility that you be able to claim a Child tax credit.

Best advice though is to consult your tax accountant/CPA. Good Luck!!

As long as he has been out of the house for the last six months, you can file head of household. If he's stayed overnight even one night in the past six months, that disqualifies you. Your other options are Married filing Separate or married filing joint (if you two get along well enough and he's willing to do it as well.) Good Luck.
