is it the fat factor, or does it do something else to your body?

Trans fats (partially or fully hydrogenated oils) are the mother of all dietary evil -- the father being high-fructose corn syrup. They're bad for you because (a) they cause you to gain weight, much in the same way saturated fat does, (b) they raise your "bad" cholesterol levels while lowering your "good" cholesterol levels, which promotes heart disease, and (c) they raise your triglycerides, which promotes Type II adult-onset diabetes. Nothing good comes out of trans fat.

P.S.: Not all fat is bad for you. Mono-and-polyunsaturated fats are very good for you because your body needs them to metabolize certain vitamins like Vitamin E. They also raise your "good" cholesterol while lowering your "bad" cholesterol and they don't cause weight gain like saturated fat and trans fat do (But be warned: Too much of anything can be bad for you, so don't overdo on mono-or-polyunsaturated fat). Best sources of these fats are: avocadoes, eggs, fish, fish oil, flax seed, flax seed oil, nuts of any kind, and olive oil.
