I have a 5 month old house cat, last night I noticed that there was puss coming out of one of his eyes which he was cleaning away himself however his eye is still pretty swollen. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? He's also been sneezing quite often so wasn't sure if it was the cold of some sort!

Thanks

Thanks for great advice so far...

He also loves rubbing his face off mines, should I stop him doing it in case he passes something on?

It sounds like your cat has an Upper Respiratory Infection. Take him to your vet and he'll probably prescribe antibiotics for the URI and one for the Conjunctivitis. Don't expect your cat to get over it by himself or it could lead to pneumonia which is twice as dangerous and expensive. Hope this helps.

I am sure that I will get a thumbs down because I avoid going to the vet at all costs. I also believe in homeopathic medicine. If you don't want to pay the huge cost of taking your kitty to the vet try this. My kitten had the same thing happen when I first got him. It was an infection. Make a solution of 4 cups purified water to 1 tsp boric acid powder. Soak a cotton ball in it and wipe his eye twice a day. It will clear up in a few days. This is the same ingredient that is in prescriptions, just a heck of a lot cheaper. I use this solution on my eyes as well. It's very soothing. Hope your kitty gets feeling better soon.

Two things come to mind.
He may have something in his eye that's causing the puss and swelling.
But sense you said he was sneezing it sound more like an upper respiratory infection.

Either way I think a trip to the Vet is in order.
If there is something in his eye the longer it's there the more damage in might do and a URI needs to be treated with antibiotics.

Hope kitty feels better soon.

It can very well be an eye cold. You need to take you kitty to the vet to get some meds. The cold can spread and if not treated it can become something worse like URI.

Make an appt to see your vet asap.

A vet will give you medicine. This eye disease can recur in cats, it doesn't go away. The medicine will make it better but it could come back. The medicine should be reasonably priced, not too expensive, maybe under 20 dollars.

If you see pus it means there is a bacterial infection and a vet should look at it very soon. Antibiotics may be needed to clear it up. Eye infections need to be treated as soon as possible as they can lead to loss of an eye if not treated.

Oh, the poor baby! Yes, take the baby to the vet and do lots of DUSTING around the house...and vacuum under the chair and couch and such. Lots of Mites and whatnots for poor kitty to sneeze at!
Good luck with it all!

Sounds like an upper respiratory infection. This can affect eyes and nose. Please take him to the vet before he gets worse and you have a dead cat!

Also, if he's around any other cats, they can catch it, so keep him separated until he's treated and well again!

I AM A VET!!! Your cat has an upper respritory infection. Those are all of the symtoms of one so I would take him to a vets office right away.

uh oh... looks like kitty may have aome kind of upper respiratory illness... you have to take him to the vet to have it treated. Could be fatal if lft unabated and if it is a respiratory illness, it is contagious to other cats. Have it checked out just to be on the safe side.
