He should be crated for his own safety. Puppies are like toddler who knows what they are going to find to get into.

I'd suggest keeping him confined to one room, so he can get to know his surroundings better and feel comfortable.
Cover a small area in newspaper and everytime you see your dog sniffing around or circiling it usually means they want to do something so put them on the newspaper straight away. Reward him everytime he does something on the paper.
Leave the tv on for him. This should help calm him, although the radio is already a good option.
Provide plenty of toys, if the pup doesn't seem too interested try rubbing a little food on them, they love anything nice and smelly like corned beef!
Also provide a nice warm bed.
I've heard that placing an item of your clothing with your scent on in his bed will help.
Leave food and water down at all times when he is at this young age.
We do all this with our pup and there seems to be no problems. Now and again she will have the odd accident but hey what do you expect from a pup?
You seem to be doing everything good so far.
Good luck :]

The first thing is to purchace a crate for while you are away. A pup can learn to get into everything as they are just learning to explore and can get hurt. The radio is good too as that keeps the outside noises outside and won't scare your pup.I do this with mine.I have 3 dogs and I would hate to see the mess they could make. A few toys with the baby is great.Good for the teeth coming in too and keeps them occupied. To get him used to the crate leave for an hour then two hours then longer so he knows that you will be back and won't be scared. Good luck

A crate is a great idea. It might sound cruel, but a puppy likes to feel secure so being in a smaller space whilst you are out is fine. My dog Oscar eventually started to go into his crate when he was tired even with the door open because he felt safe in there. Just a word of warning re plastic toys, Oscar chews and eats them so you may be better getting the soft toys if your puppy does the same, as the plastic can get stuck in their throats. Other than that just try to be at home with him as much as possible so he doesn't get bored.

Well if your dog seems happy and your not coming back to mess and chos then i would assume your pup is quite content while your out.Try some nice hard toys to releive boredom while your out,and you can get some mind games aswell, the kong is brilliant for dogs on there own you fill it with tasty food and then the dog has to work to get it out,it can keep them ammused for hours, you can get kongs and simlar toys at good pet shops.Remember to always let your pup out just before you go out and also when you return aswell.Good luck

HI, Now I have a six month old Boxer female, bless her, she is a real monkey!
She has taken to wee, ing on the stairs, which is not so nice!!
I am putting her in a crate whenever I go out, only for up to 4 hours is legal, I've only left her for two so far.
when you feed your dog, put it out straight away, stay with it till it does it's business, then when it does, jump up and down, clap your hands and smile, laugh and say 'good' whoever!!!
treat it like its the best thing since sliced bread.
If you see it sniffing around the floor, show it the door, say to it 'go and pee' go with it and when it pee's, jump for joy!
You will notice, it is only when you are not watching that you dog will pee where it's not wanted.
Leave the TV on, not the radio, they do watch tv with plenty of toys, a new one every week.... and phone him everyday....
Ah yes, My Boxer boy, when I had to leave him at home, and I had my phone installed for the first time, I took to phoning him every day, and guess what....
every day,
the line was engaged!!!!!!!

Good luck, if you need any more info, please feel free to mail me, I have a boxer rescue on the red sea so I just speak to you by my experience

My 7 month old puppy spends hours and hours playing with old trainers. I know that this is not good practice for teaching your pup not to chew your shoes but if you are leaving your pup along for long periods - you need to compromise! Buy a few trainers from Oxfam and stuff some treats in the soles and in the nooks and crannies and your pup will be entertained intermitantly for several hours.

If I'm going to be away for more than a few hrs, I keep a Kong filled with peanut butter in the freezer. You can also fill it up with treats that your puppy enjoys. I guarantee that he will stay occupied until the Kong is completely empty. Sold at most pet stores and not expensive at all. I also recommend a crate. Keeps them from looking for trouble as well as keeping them safe. Good luck.

Put him in a crate. Don't leave him in there for too long of time periods. Run home on your lunch break to let him out to potty and make sure you let him out the second you get home. Have a friend help you out by stopping by to let him out. Give him treats for pottying outside like a good puppy. If you make a routine of it that helps.

If he cries about being in the crate at first, that is normal. You can't let him out when he cries or he will always cry thinking you'll let him out if he cries. Leave the crate open when you're home and keep his toys in there. Let him lay in there with his stuff all he wants. Make sure he gets lots of attention, exercise and human contact when he's not in the crate.

Give him a treat when you put him in so he knows the crate isn't punishment. Don't ever use the crate for punishment or he will never like his crate.

Some people think crate training is mean, but it's not mean when it's done right and it keeps the puppy from hurting himself in your home unsupervised. Unsupervised he could eat something you didn't even realize was dangerous or that he could reach or even WANT to eat like a wooly sock, string, an electrical cord, or something really nasty from the trash.

Chewy stuff can keep a dog busy for hours. Be careful which chewy treats (bones, rawhides, that sort of thing) you leave him with. Some may potentially splinter as he chews them up and you really don't want that to happen when there's no one home to help him. Socks can be hazardous if they go in one end and never come out the other. Wires can shock. Weird things from the trash can do all kinds of harm depending on what he ate, and if you didn't see him eat it, how will you tell the vet what he ate? How will you know for sure it was something he ate causing the problem?

Once your puppy is successfully crate-trained he'll consider his crate to be his den and he'll feel safe in there. That will be his own space and he'll like it. I even know a jack russel terrier who guards his crate. He'll go in there on his own, sometimes to chew on a toy, other times just to nap. But when he's in his crate, if someone so much as walks too close to his crate he gets defensive like a teenager saying "Get out of my room!" He loves his crate and he refuses to share it. He takes most of his naps in there, he hides his treats in there and his favorite toys.
