The ZIP code is the system of postal codes used by the United States Postal Service (USPS). The name ZIP, an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan that is properly written in capital letters, was chosen to suggest that the mail travels more efficiently, and therefore more quickly, when senders use it. The basic format consists of five numerical digits. An extended ZIP+4 code includes the five digits of the ZIP code, a hyphen and then four more digits, which allow a piece of mail to be directed to a more precise location than by the ZIP code alone. ZIP Code was originally registered as a trademark by the U.S. Postal Service but its registration has since expired.
ZIP codes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region in that group (or perhaps a large city) and the fourth and fifth digits representing more specific areas, such as small towns or regions of that city. The main town in a region (if applicable) often gets the first ZIP codes for that region; afterward, the numerical order often follows the alphabetical order.

A Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) Code is the numerical code assigned by the US Postal Service to designate a local area or entity for the delivery of mail. ZIP Codes may consist of 5, 7, 9, or 11 digits, and may refer to a street section, a collection of streets, an establishment, a structure, or a group of post office boxes.
Using ZIP Code-based geographic data is not an excellent choice since the USPS indiscriminantly assigns ZIP Code boundaries, which are subject to change at any time, and do not represent true communities or neighborhoods. Unfortunately, ZIP Code data is not appropriate for many geographic purposes

In the U.S. the zip code is a 5 digit number (sometimes with an additional hyphenated number) that is part of the mailing address. We address our mail . . name, street number and name, State, and zip code. The zip code is a faster way for the post office to recognize and sort mail into zones or areas. If someone writes a state abbreviation that is illegible, the post office employee can tell which state it is by the zip code. Small cities usually only have one zip code. Larger cities may have 3 or more different zip codes.
