Eh, I guess that saying comes from the Cold War days when having the best rocket scientists was vital.
I'd suggest that the most important and pressing research these days is instead in the medical field as we pursue a cure for things such as cancer.
So I think they ought to say "It's not like we're trying to find the cure for cancer".

The male scientist would turn to the female one and say i love you, then they would open a hotel together. thats what happened to me anyway!
