No it isn't needed, but many Wiccans have one anyway (they simply go to a tatoo parlor). They reason they do it is for shock value.

Get one if you wish but you don't need one to practice. Though I have heard of covens in the past the require their members to get some form of tattoo, I disagree with this as most Wiccans would.
The best thing about Wicca is how open it is to let you work up your own custom ways of worship, what works for one of us may not work for the rest. If only all religions were this open with their followers then things would be less stressful on the spiritual front.
If you do decide to get a tattoo make sure you put a lot of time and thought into it. I have three tattoos right now but have not yet gotten anything Wicca related, and I've been practicing for 10 years now. I would like to get a tattoo of some Wiccan symbol but I have yet to find something that I know I wouldn't mind having stuck to me forever. Tattoos are a big decision, more so when they are symbolizing something that could change, like your religion.

Why would you need a Wicca tattoo to become Wiccan? Do you need to get a tattoo of a crucifix if you want to become Catholic, or a Star of David if you're converting to Judaism (not that Judaism allows tattoos, but...)?

The answer is no. Why would you ask such a question? I do have a pentagram tattoo, but that's because I have many other tattoos, and when I became Wiccan it seemed silly to have all these other tattoos declaring who I am and what I believe in and not having a pentagram as well.

You can do anything you want to your body - that's the spirit of Wicca! :)

I have a rose tattoo and recently got my navel pierced. Eventually, I'm getting a pentagram, but I haven't done it yet. But I love body art, and lots of people don't. It's a personal matter.

Edit: It would be a strange rule, too, if you were right. Wiccans, historically, have been persecuted for their faith. Requiring a unique brand would be very insensitive given that most Wiccans are in the broom closet for a good reason and wouldn't want a tattoo giving away their religious beliefs.

You don't have to get a tattoo to practice Wicca. I have 4 tats (non religious) and am getting a pentacle (star in circle) for my 5th.

However it has to be in a hidden spot, unlike the other 4. Really, what would you say if you were a 90 y/o Lutheran and you saw your pentacle-tattooed organist walking up the aisle right onto the altar on Sunday morning?

As a rule, no, tats aren't necessary. Tats are a personal choice. But I have heard of tight-knit covens volunteering to get matching tats, and I have heard of one BTW trad that required it. But those are exceptions to the rule. It will depend on whether you want to join a coven, and what that particular coven does. It's unlikely that you will stumble on a coven that requires it though because in the last 15 years I've only found one that did. If you are interested in a solitary practice, you won't have to worry about any of this.

Someday I would like to get one to symbolize my beliefs and I know quite a few people who feel the same way. We are lucky in my community to have a pagan tattoo artist who specializes in pagan-related designs.

I wanted the same thing. Here's what I did. I had it drawn, it was an armband. Vines that intertwined to a pentacle at the middle of it. I had it put on in henna just to see if it is what I wanted. I have 3 other tats, 1 of which I wish I had thought about a little longer. After about a week, I realized, no, it wasn't what I wanted.

Good luck in making your choice.

Of course not. If you want a tat, get one. If you don't, don't.
There is no rule in Wicca that says you have to have a tattoo.

Like others have said, you don't need a tattoo to be a Wiccan, or any other flavor of pagan. However, the pagan community tends to overlap with a lot of subcultures that are very tattoo-friendly, so you have a lot of pagans with that sort of body art.

Generally speaking, when pagans do get ink, it's something that's spiritually meaningful (though this is a generality, not universal--there are, of course, exceptions!). I know pagans who have symbols of their particular faith, or their totems and other spirit guides, or various deities, or even spells and sigils tattooed on their bodies. Like anyone, though, we have to think long and hard to be sure that this is something that we can to ahve on our bodies for the rest of our lives!

I have two wolves, one on each bicep. One is dark, and the other is light, and they represent two halves of one whole; I allow myself to be the Union of Opposites. I also have a dragon's claw holding a pearl with my husband's personal sigil on it; we traded ink for our handfasting this past July. He asociates himself with myths of Asian dragons, who are known for chasing pearls (literal or metaphorical) across the sky.

However, even if for whatever reason I move on from paganism (I've only been here a decade, and I have at least a few more decades in me!) I want to keep all my tattoos as reminders of where I've been. All of them marked personal rites of passage, adn I don;t want to forget those lessons.

No, you don't need a tattoo to Practise Wicca. You can have them, but it's not needed.

I know many Wiccans. None of whom have tattoos. I am Pagan and have been for 13 years. I don't have any tattoos either and never plan on getting one. I don't know where you got the idea that you had to get one, but you don't. Tattoos are personal preference.
