Why do westerners condemn the eating of dog meat but eat beef?
The common justification against dog meat is that dogs are man's best friend. But in actual fact, it is the Western man's best friend. The rest of the world treat it as any normal animal. Yet Westerners scream murder when they see dogs being eaten in Asia.
Similarly, the Hindhus treat cows as sacred animals. So why don't the westerners stop eating beef and all that big mac.

It is hyprocrisy because Western groups have regularly campaigned for the stop of the sale of dog meat in Asia. Does anyone still remember how Fifa criticised South Korea for its dog sale trade? Asians do not go to the West and campaign for beef to be banned or pork to be banned.

I think it's an age old argument that is defined by the cultural differences in our world.
As with many issues I don't think this will ever be universally agreed upon.
You're right, we (westerners) get upset because dogs are pets to us. It's interesting that I don't hear anyone complaining about eating snake meat though and many many people have snakes for pets.
I think people personify dogs more so then any other animal.
As far as being hypocritical, well, it makes me sad to think about dogs being eaten, but not cows. Just the culture I was raised in. So I guess that makes me a hypocrit. I was raised around cows (mainly dairy) and grew attached to a few as a child. But it was a fact of life that somey go to slaughter. It's NOT a fact of life that dogs go to slaughter.
Good question, wish I had a better answer. Now I feel like an a**.
ADDED...I'll probably get a lot of negative responses to this, but you have to remember who our government is. Now I'm not saying it's not sometimes necessary, but our government likes to stick it's nose where it doesn't belong ALL THE TIME. Most times I feel justification in what our government does, but when it comes to cultural beliefs I think sometimes things are taken too far.
What would the US do if Hindus decided to jump in and try to stop us from eating beef? Wouldn't THAT be interesting?

A lot of people like to be against certain things just for the sake of argueing. Its a waste of time.
I understand that different cultures do and eat different things. It's common knowlegde. But unfortunately there are people that want to argue and just to be noticed.
It doesn't mean that I would eat dog if I was in Asia, its just not my style. Or I wouldnt eat horse meat in Vienna, which is their delicacy.
I like beef, but if I was in a crowd of Hindhus, I don't want to offend them, so I wouldnt around them.
All people are different, just some are more stubborn than others.

Umm, because we're not all Hindus.
Just like the Asian who says, "glad you Westerners believe that dogs are pets and not food, but I'm going to eat this dog anyway", I think people from Western cultures have the right to say, "Glad you Hindus think cows are sacred, but I'm going to eat this steak."
How is that hypocrisy, and when have my beliefs ever stopped someone from eating a dog?
ADDED: Ah, now I see your point. I sometimes think cultural insensitivity is part of being human. Tribal mentality. Some people are just more vocal about it than others.

Okay the best way I can explain this to you......if something is being kept as a pet.....it would be hard for most people to accept it as a food source.I don't think is was so much about eating the dogs.....it was more about how they are kept and killed.I'm all for the humane treatment of animals.....a lot of meat producing farms here in the U.S. are taking steps to provide the animals with such. It's a very controversial issue and you'll never be able to make everybody happy.

As a little reminder...most of the Pork consumed in Asia is imported from the U.S.

One of the amazing things about humans is they have the ability to justify their actions within their own brain. Thus we have the hypocrite. Every person does it and every culture too. It doesn't make it right but, it is what wars are made of. Good luck in finding the answer. We all at some point in our lives are hypocrites.

I don't comdemn the eating of dog meat, although I don't like it. However, there is a lot of cruelty in the marketing and killing of dogs for meat. But until we clean up our own practices of meat-animal farming I don't think we can point our fingers at others.

There are a lot of people that (sadly) don't see outside the box and realize that there are any cultures but their own.

I see your point. I don't think that I could knowningly eat dog or cat. But I really don't think that we should judge another culture for eating them.

I agree, it is none of our business.
Doesn't seem to stop us from forcing our opinion in many different things. I don't know why you would think we would mind our own business in this one matter.

It's a difference in culture, and in how we are raised.
What is bad for one, is normal for another.
