Okso my dog has had a cough for about a month now also he has lost some weight. So we took him to the vetAll he did was listen to his heart with the stethascope thing and said he 'suspects' there is somthin wrong with his heart But obivously his heart was beating extremly fast as he really hates going into the car and he hates the vets so he got himself all worked up and we had to drag him into the vets door as he hates it so much. He was so scared he was shaking So I dont think the vet really cared n just said the first thing that came to his mind He gave us tablets He still seems to be coughing but not as much and I dont see how a cough has anything to do with his heart
The vet asked us did he have dioreia or was he less active. And he has none of them he runs about like his crazy normal self and still has a very big appitite. But since going I cant stop crying as I dont want him to die. Im not sure what age he is buthe is about 8r9 What could be wrong with him?

Did your vet check for worms? Take him to another vet. Worms can cause a dog or cat to cough because a certain kind (I can't remember) crawls into throat and makes them cough. He may also have congestive heart failure - water collecting around his heart, it can be treated and they can live for years with it. I believe the tablet is called lasic. You can just take his stool to the vet and they can check for worms without putting him thru the stress of going there himself. I would call your vet and have him explain more about what he feels your dog may have, so that you are better informed of what treatments are available for your wonderful pet. If they do not find worms, and your vet doesn't give better service, and your dog continues to lose weight and cough, then I would find another vet. I wish you the best of luck, and try not to worry too much. Ther are caring vets out there. Give your dog a hug for me.

Ok, first, consider getting a second opinion. Second, it could be a heart condition. That doesn't mean he's going to die. My dog has a slight heart murmer. The vet told me to watch for coughing and such. If that were to happen then they'd look into more options. For now he's doing fine. Maybe he has Kennel Cough, a virus they catch from other animals, which is fixed with meds. Also, it could be a condition where there is fluid built up around his heart. That could cause the coughing. The pills you were given (you didn't say what they were so I don't know for sure) could be to reduce the fluid. None of these problems would be a death sentence for your dog. Definately, get a second opinion from a good vet. Explain before going in that he gets excited and doesn't like the vet. They may give you some ideas to help your dog. You MAY end up reducing his running a bit in the end, to help with the coughing. I hope some of these have eased your mind a bit. I know it can be scary when it is your "baby" who is sick

Sounds a lot like Kennel Cough(caught from other dogs/kennels)...this is easily treatable with medication that the vet gives you. Please do you're doggy a favor and go see another vet, if you only have the one...try to see another vet at the clinic other than the one you just saw. Some vets will even do house visits if your dog stresses a lot going there. If nothing else you could go to your local animal shelter and see if there is a vet on staff there that could help?! Good luck...and try to get him into someone else!

If your dog is still active with a cough, it may be a detremental thing such as heart disease; however, I've dealt with several sick dogs and to me what it sounds like that is asthma, or it could be even simple allergies to something. Your best bet seek another opinion from a different vet. Also, it sounds like he is a mix, but if you know what the mixes are you can research common problems that those breeds develope with age, which will narrow you possibilities.

Good Luck.

I odnt know what to tell you. Call another vet and make an appointment with him. Your dog may not like this but if you take it to the vet more often for daily check-ups then the dog well soon learn to like it

Why don't you take him to another vet? If your dog gets that worked up about going to a vet, try to find one that does house calls. Some still do, although they're harder to find.

He could have heart problems....if you don't feel 100% comfortable with the Vets diagnosis.....take him to another Vet for a second opinion. You may have different treatment options if he does not respond well to one.

Do you use heart worm prevenative? I would go see another vet. If you do not give him anything for heart worms, that would be my guess. Make sure they test him for heart worms. We had a dog that took the heartworm shots when they were out and he still got heart worms.

I have my parents dog, she is about 12 or13 she is very over weight. but when they had her their vet said congestive heart failure was most likely her problem.I know not all vet's take the time to explain, just try and find one that will you just have to be very strong and tell them you want them to explain to you in real terms so you will know what to do for your four legged loved one.
