The first step of digestion is chewing. If the kernel of corn escapes being ground up by your molars, it goes down into your stomache and then intestines, where digestive enzymes, acids, and bile complete the digestive process. The cellulose structure of many plants, such as corn, is not affected at this point, so it passes on through your digestive tract, relatively unscathed.
