I have a 91 Ford Escort that the battery went dead in, no problem right? I hooked up jumper cables (they are pretty old) and tried to jump it...I hooked it up to the running vehicle first then to the Escort, it threw sparks when I tried connecting it. I thought maybe I had them backwards for some reason, so I switched them...same thing, sparks still flew. So I was thinking that the jumper cables probably had a short in them or something since they were so old. I got another pair and tried them...I got the headlights to work, but nothing else...I looked in the fuse box under the hood and noticed that the "Main Fuse" (which is a 100 amp fuse) had blown. So I replaced that fuse with a new 100 amp fuse. The battery does not seem to be charging (I checked it with my multimeter...before charging it was at 0.02 volts and after charging for 10 minutes it was still at 0.02 volts even after revving up the running car)...plus, there are still sparks when I connect the jumper cables.

None of the interior lights work and the engine turning the key gets absolutely nowhere. Could there be some electrical problem like a short or grounding problem? What else could be wrong? Thanks in advance!

Ok well your problem is you might have fried your pcm in your escort. Always make sure you have the right cable hooked up to the right post or you can get into some pretty hairy stuff, like now. The order should be as following: Place the (--) cable on a good grounding place in the dead battery car, then place the (+) cable on the positive post of the dead battery. Then without the car running, place the positive, then negative cable ON the battery, you don't have to put it on the frame. Then start the car, and hold the rpms at about 2000 for ten or 15 seconds. Then have someone crank over the dead car wile the other car is running. The reason sparks flew is because you had it on the running car before the dead one. Have you ever hooked up a battery charger on a battery wile it was on? This is the same thing because the car was running. The biggest thing you want to look out for is that you dont want the car running!! Well if you cant find anymore fuses blown then you can be sure you fried your pcm. Sorry man, Hope this helps!!

Edit: well with your additional details it sounds like you definitely fried your pcm. Here is a link to a new one. http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductList.aspx?parttype=248&ptset=A&searchfor=Engine+Computer

Try bringing the battery into a service area to get tested to see if it needs replacement. I had a battery that drove me nuts until one day I finally bought it in to get tested, and it turned out I had a faulty battery that wouldn't hold charge. Maybe your battery is old and needs replacement.

If it isn't the battery, then you might have a bigger problem such as the starter, or alternator that isn't charging the battery properly.

Just my opinion, good luck

it could be the battery in general.. the battery is probably no good. it's probably not taking the charge because your alternator.. Take the alternator to a place where they can test it for you.. like Auto Zone... if you can't get the car to move then just take the alternator out by itself.. take the battery to and have that checked, don't want to make multiple trips.. Oh and yeah you have to change that fuse out..
