The dalmation is still a puppy (15 weeks, not spayed yet female), and the dachshund is a 2 year old neuetered male. They play around a lot now playfully biting each other and pinning each other, but I'm worried that the dachshund will get hurt. Is this wrestling important for their development and establishing who's "boss"? I want the dachshund to be the boss because he's older, but I really really don't want him to be hurt. Any suggestions?

Thank you all so much for your answers already! They are really helpful. There's just one thing though - the dachshund is so sweet, he lets the dalmation bully him. Like he lets her take his toys, and his treats, and he completely lets her run him over. I wish the dachshund would be more assertive but he's so darn sweet.

It's totally normal for them to wrestle and play like that! The dalmation won't seek the Alpha position because there is a dominant male in the position already.

It's fine to let them wrestle a bit, but don't let them get out of control because the dachshund could get really hurt.

Make sure they are supervised when playing and make sure they know that it's over when you say it over.... they need to know YOU are the boss. Don't allow it in the house so you don't have to worry about wrestling when you aren't in the room.

Establish rules now about this sort of play and everyone will always be happy and safe.

This is completely normal. However, I would suggest reading up on some of the pack behavior of dogs. The dalmation has established himself as dominant over the smaller dog and that means he can take whatever toys food ect he wants whenever he wants. This is normal. The best way to avoid fights in the future is to go with the natural pack order that the dogs will establish for themselves.

it's not a dominate thing the dalmation is just a pup and she wants to play and the dashund since he is older he will let her know when he is tierd or playin he will always be the dominate one because he was the 1st one there plus she is a gurl and there is always a dominate female and a dominate male i wouldnt worry about this at all its not that big of a deal also the dashund will let her no if she hurts him same way for the dalmation.

It's completely natural and needed fog their development.
the "Alpha" of the 2 will be boss,if both are alpha the male will assert his natural authority

My mother-in-laws dachshund plays with my dobermans all the time. (it's so funny, because the dobes are black/rust and so is the doxie).

now their just playing, and just playing is totally normal,
but, if you really don't like it then separate them and let them see each other twice a day, just so that they don't forget about each other or become enemies!

but if your not to worried just scold them if they get to rough or something!
