My son-in-law says that there is 5" of ice in different areas of Ontario that would allow him to ice fish....he could be right, but we are concerned because we are having a very MILD November, December and January so far...Any information would be welcome

Sadly, no. The weather has been too mild right across the board this "winter". Golf courses are open here and there though. I live in Ottawa and the prognosis for the canal is "not this year"! Sad but true. Try Manitoba. Dont let him do it, the conditions are truly not right(to warm) Stay Safe!!

Highly doubt it; we live in eastern Ontario where it is normally colder than southern or central Ontario and there is virtually no ice on the waterways. If there is it not strong enough to hold up a dog, let alone a person. Stay off the ice !!!!!
