It took a couple of lessons, luckily I passed first time! The instructor told me to drive around the testing grounds while pretending that there's a kid tied to the bumper at the back of the car. The kid has just started walking and gives tiny steps. I had to go slow enough not to drag the kid behind the car. I didn't get it right (he told me I dragged the poor child the whole time) and I still can't figure out what the use of the exercise was.

12 lessons. The only funny incident was passing first time after overtaking a lorry and then cutting him up to take a corner in 3rd gear on my test!

I had 1 official lesson. My dad taught me the rest, and after 8 years I have never had an accident, have recently passed my advanced driving license (which I taught myself) and am almost certainly a safer driver after half a bottle of whiskey than some freshers are when stone-cold sober.

I bought a car and taught myself to drive on country roads. Practiced a couple of hours per day for about two days. Took drivers test and got license. Things were a lot simpler in the 50's.

22 hours. Had a couple of hairy moments when I was mortally hungover from the night before. Best bit was when I passed, instructor had dropped me off home, and about 10mins late i got a knock on the door and it was him. Punched me in the stomach and told me to drive carefully and walked off. (He was a mates Dad, but still)

20 lessons at 18 and passed first time. Although boyfriends mum at the time was trying to give me vodka as she said it would calm my nerves, i laughed at the time, but how irresponsible was that!
