We also had to leave Zim and have British passports and just a little older than your cousin. We received a huge amount of advice and assistance and are coping well. Having the British passport at least means he has permission to stay and work here. Although he may not be able to teach there should be other openings for him along similar lines. We wish him luck and hope it all works out well for him - it has got to be an improvement on living conditions in ZIm these days.

Nothing for the first 6 months or 1 year. It doesn't matter that you are British or not. If you have been away from the UK for more than a certain amount of consecutive days than you need to wait and show that you have settled.

If you are asking about welfare benefits, I think he would be entitled to all non-contributory benefits: job seekers allowance, income support, housing benefit, council tax benefit are the main ones, also free NHS like anyone else, and he can apply for council housing.

On reaching retirement age - still 65, I think - he would not get a pension as such, having made no UK contributions, but would get income support.

It can be a pretty tough adjustment, and the bureaucracy can be hard work, to say the least, but he should be OK eventually.

he would not get job seekers allowance. I have recently returned to UK, have paid class 3 contribution all my life, but was told because I have not paid enough class1 I do not qualify for the allowance, it took them 10 weeks to find that out!! If you're circumstances are different to others going to the job centre, it freaks them out, you have to fit into their square otherwise they dont know what to do.
