Are they trying to say that they themselves are God?

If im not mistaken the phrase only God can convert people is saying that the people that are actively trying to win converts to Jesus are saying they are God.

Its taught to them nowadays so as to protect the christian from opening themselves up to criticisms. They are told "its their job to share the gospel not convince people of it". It keeps them safe from argument. The actuall Christians in the line of fire are unaware that this is what is being done to them. If they try to convince others, it could reveal how unconvincing they really are.
It keeps the flock safe somewhat.

It was Jesus, who tells us in the scriptures to reach out and evangelize the world. Salvation is something which happens in your life, based upon what happens in your heart and that is based upon your thinking. G-d recognizes what's happening with you and accepts where you are at. We as Christians sow the seed and it is G-d who provides for the development of the seed to a state of blossoming in your life. Trust Him, it works.

Christians are to only plant the seed in your heart and mind (so to speak) and let God do the rest. they are NOT trying to say they are God, by no means. we are instructed to spead the Gospel (good news) of Christ to all we meet.

What it means to me is that I have no free will in the matter - that only God can choose to convert me. So, if he chooses not to, I'm pretty much farked.

God/Holy Spirit works in the heart.
A Christian cannot do this for another.
