My best suggestion is if you get a cage that is hunged from the ceiling or a cage that has a high post so your pooch can't reach it. If your pup is acting a little naughty tell him no and mean it.
Make sure that there is no way that he can jump on a chair and knock it over and make sure that he can't jump high enough to reach it himself. Thouse little bugers can jump.

Its not an impossible task but would take time and patience. You will need to keep the bird safe from the dog in a cage and out of reach while you are not around. Don't let the dog harass it either as that is not going to get them off to good start!. Have the dog controlled IE tied up or looking through a screen/window etc and let the dog see you talking to the bird and handling it. When the bird is in its cage pick up the jack and walk to the cage and show it the bird and chastise it if it gets excited/wants to chase the bird.
The dog will eventually learn that the bird is part of the family and leave it alone. We had hunting dogs that happily lived with a rabbit and wallaby even though they would chase wild rabbits and game. My neighbours have two cats and two dogs and they all live happily together quite happily. Its just a matter of showing the potential "aggressor" that the "pack" has a new member and giving them a bit of time to come to terms with the concept.

well the bird of course would be in a cage most of the time..if you have a screen porch you could allow the bird to fly in it but make sure that your dog isn't on the screen porch while the bird is flying around. also you could put the bird in one room and make sure the dog doesn't go in there by either closing the bedroom door or putting a doggy gate up at the enterance of the room.
if your dog is going to bug the bird and stress the bird out i do not recommened getting a bird (even though your really want one) because the bird would have a stressful life and the bird would be better off at the pet store.

I own over 150 birds.
I am an avian breeder.
I have kept birds for years, as well as dogs.
Bulldogs && Boxers.
Who love try to eat birds.
It will be ok.
You just need to supervise.
Try taking the bird in another room away from the dog.
Dogs && cats carry bacteria in thier saliva that is lethal to birds.
Do not let the bird have contact with the dog.
If the bird does, seek an avianist.
Also make sure the dog is never allowed where the bird's cage is located.
Do this && everything will be okay. = ]

well..if you really want a bird then i suggest buying a flight cage, sounds like the bird would be spending a lot of time in its cage.please really think about what youre doing.birds require human contact everyday and human interaction as well.they are not house decorations but have real feelings.birds that are stuck in a cage with little or no human contact will start plucking their feathers and then you have more than you bargained for.also. a barking dog can make the bird stressed and again..you'll have a very unhappy bird.im not trying to discourage you from getting a bird if you really want to but just looking a the situation realistically.birds are a responibility that not everyone can or wants to handle

Keep the bird in its cage, obviously. You've got a jack russell, of course it would kill a bird if it could! If you didn't research the breed before you got it, you should have.

Just keep it in a cage and the dog cant hurt it. if you want the bird to be outside the cage then put the dog in a cage for awhile.

Don't get the bird. We can't have it all. I know how you feel, I had to give a wonderful dog I really love because my cat can't get along with him. It;s better to be safe. Don't put the poor bird in danger or in the agony of being looked at like a prey!

If you want to buy bird then OK but when you want to make free bird then keep dog in the cage and if when you want to free dog then keep bird in his nest that means safely away from dog.

keep the bird up high in a cage... but dont let the dog near the room that the cage is in. He might go nuts but that's the only way.If you dont have doors in your room put up one of them gates that are big enough to where your dog can't jump over them. I hope i helped you.
