The humidifier and vapor rubs on chest and neck may help a little at night. As for the hosp. visit...I recommend talking with him about it every day to let him know what lay ahead. You should be able to find age appropriate books from a library that will help with the explanations and expectations on a toddler level.
With my kids when they went for immunization needles or dentist visits (with needles possibly) I always explained to them that it will hurt a little like a pinch ( and sometimes I would pinch lightly) but then explain that even tho it will hurt....It will also stop hurting.
If your son is hesitant at all, maybe a visit or two to the hosp. will help prepare him as well.
good luck.

Try a cool air humidifier? An anti-inflamatory like Tylenol may help? Rub some Unkers salve or Vick's salve on his neck. Maybe that will ease his breathing. I hate it when kids are feeling bad. I always feel so helpless that there's no INSTANT fix!

If it is that bad they need to go ahead and do it now.
