Sure is common here and I never could understand why. I know the soup originated in china but that does not mean that it has to be eaten with chopsticks every place.

Then they serve stirfry over rice and give each a spoon and fork. The spoon is for eating, the fork is a pusher.

Not like in the USA either cuz the spoon is a table spoon and not the samll spoon they use there.

Any way chopsticks with soup seems a little much to me.

Many Asian cultures serve soup with noodles. The noodles are to be eaten with the chopsticks. If no spoon is supplied, then one gracefully lifts the bowl to one's lips and sips the liquid.

In the U.S., soup is served with a soupspoon, not a tablespoon. I lived there almost all my life. Maybe in some cheap diners, you would find the tablespoon. But as a rule, there is a genuine soupspoon for soups in the U.S.

In Thailand, where I am now, the tablespoon is used in the right hand, and the fork is held in the left hand and is used backward as a pusher, just as you described. In Thailand, they will serve noodles with chopsticks, noodle soups frequently with chopsticks and a Chinese spoon.

If there are noodles, you pull the noodles out of the soup using the chopsticks. It's a LOT easier than using forks or spoons. The larger spoons given with fried rice are great too, because the rice isn't glutinous after being fried. It won't stick together, so you have to use a spoon to get your rice.

In Hong kong the noodle soup is so thick you could eat it with a fork.
The bowl is lifted up to your mouth and the contents are shoveled in using the chopsticks, the remaining liquid is then drunk from the bowl.

Chopsticks with soup is fairly normal, I practically live off Pho.
As suggested before, raise the bowl to the chin and eat that way.

Sip the broth.
