I am assuming you mean in general... NOT to all follow your onion example.

I have heard of keeping a whole slice of bread in your mouth while chopping onions. The best way to keep from crying is to wear goggles. Also, put the onion in the refrigerator before cutting it.

Best tip to stop your eyes from watering when cutting onions?
Get someone else to cut them! :)
Another great tip for the kitchen:
When you have finished cleaning your fridge, wipe the inside with a mixture of water and 2-3 drops of vanilla essence. This helps keep the fridge smelling fresh and clean.

Cut the onions and rub the surfaces with a little salt and leave it for sometime. It might help.

I wear glasses and these seem to stop the effects that onions have. I dont have any tears when I am wearing them, but used to before I had to wear the specs!
If you dont have to wear specs, then try some sunglasses (with the light on!)
Good luck!

it doesn't work though
try cutting under water or as close to running water as possible as the toxins produced when you break onion cells react with moisture

I do know that if you are painting but need to leave it till the next day.
Try wrapping the paintbrush in cling film with out washing it.
you will be able to paint the next day with a soft brush.
