In order to improve aerobic endurance you need to stress the cardiovascular system at least three times a week. In order to maintain your current level of fitness you need to stress the aerobiv system at least twice a week. If you are new to running I would suggest going three to four times a week. Even though running is great for your heart, it really reekes havoc on your bones and ligaments. On the days off try some less weight bearing exercises like cycling or swimming.

I run every other day, it's too hard on my knees and too boring to do all the time. Mix it up and you'll stay with it longer.

3 times per week. You need to give your body time to rest and repair.
