Drives you nuts doesn't it; I think they must wear blinkers and are unaware of the lanes either side of them, or the other motorway users. Seriously though, I think a lot of the people that do this are either simply nervous about changing lanes, so they just stay put, or they can't be bothered to make the effort. It's just so much less hassle to stay in the same lane; they can pass the slower vehicles without making a manoeuvre and if anyone wants to pass them, those drivers can go into the 3rd lane - sheer laziness!

It has to do with Behavior. Most people have certain driving traits and behaviors that are learned and immulated through time.

Most drivers, a good percentage of older ages, feel safer in the middle lane. If the roads are empty, this makes them feel safer. To a certain point, it is safer.

If you look at it from different angles, it is best. You certainly do not want them in the fast lane, if they are not at speed, and why travel in the slow lane if they are not necessarily going slow.

So the middle lane would actually be best for the other commuters that can go around them and if someone has to exit, they are not in the slow lane causing delays if you want to get out.

If the situation is nocturnal, then the middle lane is much safer. For example, at night, if you are in the left lane or fast lane, many people are bothered by oncoming vehicle headlights. Many times oncoming vehicles are discorteous and use high beams that impair other drivers at night.

As long as speed limits are being carried out, both fast and slow, then it should not be an issue.

I agree with Pedro S. I, and many others, do the same thing. If I'm doing the speed limit (or a little over) on a multi-lane highway, I stick to the middle lane too. The right one is usually in crummy condition because of damage from the trucks driving in it all the time, and the extreme left lane is, by law, for passing and police who like to burn up the highway just because they can. When you come up on someone in the middle lane and they're doing the speed limit, if you're going faster than they are, go around on the left. That's why they call it 'the passing lane'!

Typically the right lane is the most traveled lane and therefore has the most wear. Drivers who drive in the middle lane when the road is empty are probably trying to avoid substandard conditions in the right lane. For example: Severe cracking, pothole, and delaminations (where the top layer of pavement has worn away)

On a three-lane road in the U.S., the lanes are, from left to right, as follows: Passing lane, travel lane, transition lane. Technically, they are correct if they're driving in the middle lane. The right lane makes it easier to enter and exit the freeway without causing unnecessary traffic backup due to merging and yielding. It should be used when exiting and entering to increase/decrease speed. Following this rule ensures that cars aren't trying to squeeze in between other cars to exit the freeway.

So you can't pass in the left lane? As long as they stay out of the left passing lane, you should thank your lucky stars in my opinion. However, I agree that if your really backing up traffic in the middle lane, you should be courteous to other motorists and move to the slowest traffic lanes to the right.

they're retards, 70% are on cellular telephones, 5% are elderly and 15% are purely retards. you may fix this answer with my technique. All you do is watch for the main fabulous lane to sparkling up slightly and then pass around them and hit your breaks whilst merging into their lane. this could lead them to open their eyes and comprehend that they are applying in site visitors and not on some dirt street. in case you're fortunate they're going to crash into the median, yet ninety% of the time i've got carried out this, they then moved into the slower shifting lanes. attempt it out!

Because BMW and Mercedes drivers (Pedro S & BitBurgerPilsMan) think their cars are too good for using the slow lane.
