Hello - from a health viewpoint exercise is very important. One can decondition if one doesn't exercise.
Just going for a walk on a daily basis could help, taking the stairs instead of using the lift is an option too.
Having a drink of water or herbal tea when you feel hungry before eating is suppose to be helpful.
Also snacks such as carrots, celery, unsalted nuts and seeds instead of biscuits, chocolate, crisps etc, even if you only substitute two snack meals with the healthy alternative would help I'm sure.
Reducing Sugar in tea or coffee, say if you only have one teaspoon already, reduce it to half a teaspoon.
Avoid fizzy sugary drinks.
Little things like that can make all the difference.
The library is a good source of information too.
Good Luck, and Happy, Health New Year to all.

I've had success with exercise. Once you get in a routine, not only do you lose weight, but it's a good antidote to stress (one of the things that causes people to overeat) and the endorphin burst leaves you feeling pretty good. I have audiobooks, music, and podcasts in my mp3 player so I don't get bored while I run.
As far as diet goes, fruit, vegetables, protein, and some unprocessed carbs (e.g. brown rice instead of white) are the way to go. Stay away from tons of pasta, bread, or french fries. Stay away from sugary snacks (they make you hungry again later).
Another tip is to snack throughout the day and not eat huge meals. When you finish what's on your plate, wait a few minutes for the hunger signals to stop before considering going back for seconds.
You really need both the diet and exercise. I run enough that every so often I reward myself with something bad for me, like a nice greasy cheeseburger. Another motivator is being able to look good in nice clothes and see women checking me out, which didn't happen so much a few years ago.

Like some other people here have said. It's because most diets fail. You have to change your eating habits. Try this. For about a week or so, just modify a few things. Here's what I'm doing. For the first week I'm only eating a healthy breakfast, drinking drinks with no calories (with the execption of skim milk and 1 glass of fruit juice a day, if I want them) and drinking 64 ounces of water a day and not eating after 7pm. That's it for the first week. I can eat whatever I want for lunch and diner. I'm learning to change the way I eat, so it will be a gradual thing.
Next week I'm going to keep up with all the things I'm doing this week and add in a healthy lunch and cut out all snacking on anything that isn't healthy. Then the week after that I'll add a healthy diner through the week, with weekends keeping to a healthy breakfast and lunch and everything else, but still being able to have whatever I want for diner. Then the week after that I'll cut back to just one day of the weekend with a diner of whatever.
It will be a gradual process because we all didn't just put weight on in one day, it was a gradual thing, so we have to slowly teach ourselves how to eat healthy again and give our bodies and minds time to adjust to it.
We are always so quick to want to lose weight and we become obsessed, then we become bored, then we fail. We have to break the cycle. It won't feel like such a hard thing to do if we graudually do it. It's the same thing with exercise. Dont' start out trying to kill yourself with working out so hard, go into it graudually. Start with one or two days a week at 20 minutes, then slowly add. Something is better than nothing.
Good luck!

I am in the same situation. I have to lose a ton of weight (I am obese and have been all my life). Here is my motivation. I do it for myself. I do it because it will make me feel even more better. I am not doing to get a man, or for anyone else but me.
Do it for yourself. Not for anyone but you. Get a group of your friends who want to lose weight and create an exercising group; be each other's motivation. Join a support group, like Weight Watchers. Join a Yahoo group for weight loss; you will always find a group of people that are willing to help motivate you.
I hope this helps.

You have what we call in the SLIM WORLD hand to mouth disease. STOP FEEDING YOUR MOUTH. Problem solved! Don't buy junk food. Don't eat at fast food restaurants and exercise often. It sounds like you have a lot of motivation to keep walking to the fridge or cupboard to eat crap. When you go to the grocery store just fill up one carriage not two. SELF CONTROL BABY, SELF CONTROL, that is key.

Only 9% of people who diet actually achieve. this means that 91% fail. To successfully lose weight you have to believe in yourself, excercise, eat whatever you want and eat whenever you want, otherwise you metabilism changes and stores fat which means you gain more weight! So don't diet!

From breakfast, go ahead and ingest orange juice. But throughout all of those other day, focus on water rather then juice or soda
