Don't listen to them. People who tell you that you need to spank your kid, just have no idea how to communicate without violence.
Keep him by your side. Don't let him out of your sight. He sounds like an independent child, so this will probably drive him crazy. Give him books to read while he is grounded, as an alternative to the things he would normally do. But, make him do everything with you. If you're doing the dishes, sit him at the kitchen table. If you're working on the computer, sit him next to you but facing away from the computer. That way, he can't get to the things he's grounded from, and you don't have to beat your kid. Eventually, he will learn that if you can trust him, he won't have to be attached to you.

Put your foot down as the parent.
If the child watches TV while on punishment..remove or unhook the tv..do not allow them in the computer room. Basically, remove the child from the items they are not permitted to use. You have to stick firm on your punishment or the child will learn they can get out of it with you..and then what did you accomplish?

Remove the cord from the computer so he can't turn it on. If it is the t.v. then unplug the cable. It is effectively grounding the whole family but he'll get it. Otherwise all you can do is continually turn off the computer/t.v. when he tries to use it.

somewhere along the line you are not getting the job done because he is old enough to grip the concept of being grounded. are you and your husband working together consistently with this matter?

You are the parent not him, spank him!!! He needs to know he does not run the house hold, he understands he just knows he can get away with it. Kids are smarter than you think.
