What does it mean in Timothy when Paul writes to be joyous all the time in everything?

I guess it comes down to what turns you on. If pleasing God is what gives you your jollies then ALL situations where you choose serving him over a more pleasurable alternative WILL make you happy. As it is the pleasing him part of life that makes you happy.

I understand that you said they CAN be mutually exclusive but I am struggling to think of an example where the above does not apply. Sorry.

You're talking about situations when it's one way or the other?

What situations?

Why are you setting this up as an "either-or" thing? It's not an either-or thing.

Even worse, it's a loaded question. It's implying that believing in God automatically makes someone unhappy. At least sometimes.

No offense, but questions that are designed to be loaded, to trip up, or to yield pre-desired answers are, in my opinion, out of bounds.

"With knowledge, comes sorrow"

Happiness is an emotion, and emotions are unreliable as guides for our lives. If you live your life in passionate pursuit of happiness, you will be miserable your entire life, for as soon as you realize you are happy you will discover that it is gone.

The good news is that you can choose which emotion you will feel as surely as you can decide what color to wear in the morning. Choose to be happy despite your circumstance, no matter who says what to you.

So, does God want us happy or faithful? Faithful, it's an eternal treasure, whereas happiness is an earthly treasure.

3 But the righteous shall be glad; they shall exult before God; they shall be jubilant with joy!

111 Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart.

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

The problem is with your question is that you wrongly understand what true happiness is and what brings true joy. Your assumption is faulty. A life that has the Holy Spirit is filled with joy and happiness. On the other hand,

for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. Jer 2.18

Those who deny the Lord reject true joy and happiness (living water) and have gone after worldly pleasures (broken cisterns that HOLD NO WATER) they are fleeting and vain, they bring only temporary pleasure but soon the pleasure goes away and you have to constantly be going back, over and over again, they do not truely satisfy but only make one a slave, with no joy.

These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. 18 For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.

There is a DANGER is serving God out of a heart of DUTY also. We are commanded to be happy and serve him with happiness.

Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart, because of the abundance of all things, 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the Lord will send against you, in hunger and thirst, in nakedness, and lacking everything. And he will put a yoke of iron on your neck until he has destroyed you.
