The government of Mexico announced that it was sending more than 3,000 soldiers and federal police officers to fight drug gangs in the border city of Tijuana, the latest offensive by President Felipe Calderón, who has promised to smash organized crime. The force, backed by boats, planes and helicopters, will mount checkpoints in the city, patrol the coast and hunt down traffickers, Interior Secretary Francisco Ramírez Acuña said. Tijuana, over the border from San Diego, has long been one of the favorite smuggling routes for drugs to the United States. Last year, more than 300 killings occurred in the city.

Question:
Do you think this will help control the drug flow ?
Do you think the soldiers should help in stopping the flow of illegal aliens into the US ? What do you think about this action by Mexico,
will it help at all with stopping anything,or is it just more smoke and no fire ?

The presence of army troops may slow the drug trade for a short while, but, as always they will find a way to make money with their illicit drugs. As far as slowing illegal immigration, I dont think so, they have no mandate to keep mexican nationals from exiting the country, until that happens, its a case of " I see nothing." I believe that this is a political ploy to assuage the growing anger of American citizens who are fed up by the inaction of Mexico to actually do a single thing to address the many faceted problems along our common border. It may also be an attempt to prevent the increase of American National Guardspeople by showing a military presence in the border area.

Sigh, I hope it will help. I suspect Calderon is just joining Bush in high visability smoke and mirrors though, like our National Guard with no ability to do anything but call understaffed border patrol.

I also would feel better about this if there weren't 200 or so reports of 'incursions' onto our territory by people wearing Mexican Army uniforms, some of whom were guarding and protecting drug runners, rather than stopping them.

However, the Mexican people by polls seem to think their army is somewhat less corrupt than their police, and so maybe it will help.

I am just not at all convinced the government really wants to help in the long run. As long as the drugs are going OUT of the country, I think they don't care that much. However, I DO think they care about amnesty and the fence and I think they are adopting Bush's 'too idiotic / too little / too late' approach to making it look like they are doing something.

Sorry, but I've evolved to the 'Yeah? Prove it!' state of mind.

It should help, it's better than doing nothing. I'm glad to see that Mexico is stepping up and trying to halt that and other illegal activity. As far as the illegal aliens go, they may stop some, but I'd rather see them stop the drugs and other hard core crime. Hopefully this will have a ripple effect and help Mexico's economy grow and give the Mexican people a better future.

This new President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa is very serious about solving all of these problems and he will do everything in his power to get this task accomplished.
Lets hope that he comes out victorious.
One thing that has always boggled my mind, how is it that the U.S. cannot stop the drug flow into the Country but no one can smuggle one Cuban cigar from Cuba. Food for thought.

well calderon did say that he was going to try and take down the drug cartels. think more or less it might have been brought on more or less because of the fact that his cousin was killed by a drug trafficker. either way he already started cleaning up oxaca, michoacan and not TJ. I for once applaud his effort and hope that he does get the job done. if nothing else at least it will somewhat slow down the drug trade a bit. as for the illegal alien problem i doubt they are there to stop them. their duty is just to stop the drug trafficking.

Coming from San Diego and witnessing first hand the corruption of the Federalies in Mexico I do believe that it is time that some action is taken towards them. I do not believe that it will help stop the drug flow because i do not think that Mexico is completely at fault for it. Drugs come from every part of the country as well as every other country around us not just Mexico. It may help but there will still be drug cartels in the US as well as in Mexico working in secret..

Soldier always will win out as far as service in my book. Vet-USAF Added 11/22/07: The soldier is better trained ( at least the ones who have paid attention or have been to war ). When the soldier becomes a police officer most become complacent and lose their edge, one of the problems that evolve around civil servants.

Too little, too late.TJ isn't the only place drugs come thru,This is is smoke and mirrors to make everyone think their actually doing something the president of mexico is the leader of organized crime.Calderon,Bush and Fox probably had this planed because the patriots of the USA are organizing our efforts now more than ever, this is just another attempt to to B.S. the people of the USA to stall for more time for whatever evil that's lurking in the dark.

Mexican local police have a rep for corruption and helping drug gangs. Military is about only group that still is relatively not corrupted by drug gangs- so send them in to trouble areas where local police are known to be corrupted and not effective. Mexican Marines have been used sort of like SWAT teams in US.

Why would Mexico want to stop the flood of illegals into the U.S.? A lot of that money they make up here goes right back to the Mexican economy.
