In this moment some airlines have one way trip from LA or NY to south east asia like Singapore Airlines use A340-600 From NY to Singapore and the capacity of A340-600 nearly same but B747-400 is bigger and more powerful so I think they have one way trip from LA to Kota Kinabalu but if have any problem about flying you can contact for Thai Airways we have flight from LA to Bangkok and you can connect with Air Asia in Thailand to Kota Kinabalu with cheap and smile of Thai services :)

I think so i've seen boeing 777's go from la to kuala lumpur so a 747 I see why not
