It will really depend on how you say it. I suggest you tell it to him in person but before that explain to him that whatever he's going to hear will not affect your friendship. Then ask him what got to do with it. If it's not a deal for him then that would mean he's not into you and he's routing for another girl. But if he becomes invisible for a while, just wait maybe he's just not into offensive ladies and in time you will see how he's going to react to the situation which could be a start of a different relationship. If he is a friend and you like him maybe it is best to be honest with him? A good friend in my opinion would prefer your honesty, and you never know he might like you too.
In my experience it can seem a little awkward at first especially as you don't know how he feels but there is only one way to find out! Once it is out in the open you will both know where you stand and hopefully this can only lead to you being closer through the experience.

Well a boy friend can be a best friend as well, just like your spouse can be your best friend. Go for it.
