It sound worse than it is. I think the viral pathogen causing the infection is much less contagious when it has reached the chest than in the week preceding it with the sneezing etc.
You may have already caught the germ from the patient in the preceding week. You can blame the patient if you want but blame her for the sneezing part not the chest infection part.
Worst year, I have known for chest infections ever.

To be honest I think yours is an open question.
I have emphysema and people with this health problem and those who have COPD are more at risk from chest infection, and should try to avoid people with colds and flu to prevent getting further chest infection as this could mean further lung damage and further ill health.
I don't think a lung infection itself is contagious, it is highly likely the virus or bacteria that caused the lung infection to be the culprit.
However I am not a health professional so I could be wrong, I have based my answer on research of my own lung condition, emphysema, COPD - chest infections.
If any one thinks they have a chest infection, please see your doctor asap the sooner it is treated the better and the less likely to cause lung damage.
I am now free from lung infection and lung shadow but just have to be more precautious than most to avoid getting further lung damage.
Wishing you all a Happy Healthy New Year

an infection isn't contagious, it's usually a result of something that you have had like a cold, or a cough.

you can most def catch a chest infection- you can catch every infection going!! To prevent it just dont let anyone cough all over you. Its all to do with bacteria and germs. take no notice to anyone who says different- of course you'll catch an infection
