Most if not all contact sports have equipment that protects the athlete (or at least limit the risk) of long term or serious injury. Why not boxing.

Boxing is in a slump with the public anyway, headgear would kill the sport as a spectacle all together. If you watch some of the amateur bouts that take place for instance the boxing at the Olympics which use headgear you will see that is basically a completely different sport or at least a completely different branch of boxing, it is all about technical ability in the amateur game and you can literally tap your opponent in the scoring zone a few times and win, in the professional sport other factors apart from technical ability come into it such as power, stamina and determination (longer fights) which make it the great sport that we all know and love.

Headgear would detract the sport. Boxing is the original western art of fighting. They used to fight bare knuckle in the early 1900's and even fought until somebody quit or got knocked out. (Mike Tyson couldn't fight 30 or 40 rounds but Jack Johnson could and did. He became the 1st black heavyweight champion.) And injuries happen when big money is involved. That's why they train and get paid the way they do. (And for the record boxing is about hitting and not get hit in return.)

That would completley kill whats left of the sport of boxing. There is nothing like boxing i don't understand the point of banning it. Boxing is a one of a kind sport. 2 men fighting for their pride, one on one, toe to toe, battling it out. Only one can become victorious. There is nothing like the rush you get when you stare at your oppenent on the other side of the ring and he is staring back. You know you have to beat him or he will beat you. Its survival of the fittest and i think it is the greatest sport in history. With the others you have a team, and it doesnt matter how good you are if your team sucks you suck. You could be the best player in the NFL but if you play for the Lions you'll never get a superbowl ring. Boxing is only you, and you only. You fight for the championship on your own and you don't have to worry about anyone else ruining it. Boxing should never be banned.

What's the point of protecting them when the object is to knock them out. Next you'll want to force a rule that says your not allowed to strike your opponent's head. IMHO, the gloves are way to thick right now. Notice that in UFC cage fighting, they only have just enough padding to prevent them from breaking their knuckles. The fights are allot quicker because a KO occurs usually with 1-3 well placed shots to the head. In pro boxing, fighters get knocked out after an hour of HUNDREDS of shots to the head. This causes MUCH MUCH more long term damage than bare knuckle knock outs. Adding headgear will ultimately cause more longterm damage to the fighter.

And besides, if you are the type that would want protection in a fight, maybe you should avoid fighting?

It is a fithy sport, and I wish it was banned altogether. Two men punching each other's heads....?

I like the idea of headgear but I don't think the spectators would like it. They are a weird bunch.
