Do you mean that last the longest? (in terms of what cars can u put higher mileage on before things go wrong)
I would have to say Volvo (I put over 80,000 miles) on that car in 2 years, I have a total of 135,000 miles on it now and it's 3 years old. I did a lot of cross country driving, drove from Pennsylvania to Florida 8 times in one week, the car takes a beating, and it still drives like it did the very first day I got it. They are very dependable vehicles.
Toyota's are also very reliable, I've never owned one, but my friends and family have. Nissan's are good. See it's not really a matter of what car you buy, it's a matter of the type it is, because you can get a Toyota Corolla but it's a cheap car, will have more problems with it than say an Avalon. Spending the extra money on more pricier models is well worth it in the long run. You may not like paying $400 a month on a car payment, but if you think about how much you will have to pay in up keep, it works out to be cheaper. I had a Chevy Beretta when I was young, and that car was so good to me. It had a million miles on it, and it never broke down. I don't normally buy American cars but if I had to I would buy a Chevy, and not a Cobalt, I would go with a Malibu or an Impala. Huyandi's are crap, of course so are Kia's, be careful of cheap foreign cars, when one thing goes everything else follows.

What a US centric answer, top ten cars my tail end.
There are about 80 models in the UK that get between 61 and 68mpg, that's 51-57 miles per US gallon. So 40 miles per US gallon is pathetic. Those models will be for sale in the whole of the EU too.
I should be clear that that is combined cycle, urban and extra-urban. As an example the Citreon C1 1.4HDi 5-speed manual gets 68.9(57.4) combined and 83.1(69.25) extra-urban. Better than the best hybrid and without all those nasty recycling problems and inconvenient body style. Now that's an economical car you could live with.
The British version of the 06 Honda Accord 2.2 i-CTDi EX gets as good mileage as a Prius and is a much bigger car and much better to drive.

Hawk 996's list is accurate for the U.S. market.
However, the world's most fuel efficient production car is actually the Volkswagen Lupo TDI diesel 3L which gets 78 MPG and has gone higher than 100 MPG in road tests. It is not available in the United States though, but if you are in Europe you can get one.
