A book and/or a CD is a good start. I know a lot of people are talking about methods like the Rosetta stone packages http://www.therosettastone.co.uk/ and similar software. It may not be for free but well worth it.

Secondly, you probably need to indulge yourself with the language as an addition to the learning of grammar and words. Listening a lot to the language is important since Swedish is one of those language there spelling and pronunciation may differ a bit (just like English). You'll find some good radio at http://www.sr.se/. P1 is mostly spoken radio, P3 is directed towards young people, a lot of music but some talking as well.
Check out some news sites like http://www.aftonbladet.se/ or http://www.expressen.se/ to see what written Swedish looks like.
I answered another question on learning Swedish here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Alsutqd8h9iFk790qRIXGEnsy6IX?qid=20060904234307AADluYH
here's another site: http://www2.hhs.se/isa/swedish/
and some info from an official Sweden-site: http://www.sweden.se/templates/cs/CommonPage____4963.aspx
