Could just be a windows bug or registry error
go to start>control panel>security center
in the right hand column, click on "change the way security center alerts me"
uncheck the box for virus protection
your avg will still work fine but no more annoying alerts

Have you tried using another program to check to see how many anti virus programs you have? There should be a list of installed software in Add & Remove programs , which you can get to from the control centre.
Also try Ccleaner and Winpatrol. They both list all active and installed programs. You can use Ccleaner to uninstall software, and Winpatrol will let you stop programs loading on startup. They're both useful and free.

Google the names of all software you find to see what it is and stick to one anti virus and uninstall the other.
If there was Norton installed when you bought your machine it may still be there; its very difficult to uninstall and you need instructions from the Symantec website.

If you still cant find any reference to any other anti virus, then its some kind of false alarm.

There is usually an antivirus(Usually Norton internet security) with your MotherBoard CD ,you may have Installed that one.
So it is taking that one.
Even after Uninstalling that from Add/Remove programmes it might Work.

Disable the anti-virus and do NOT put your computer in to SAFE MODE unless you know what you are doing.
