My cat always used to do this and this is what I found:
when a cat sways it tail from side to side slowly it usually means it is happy about something. However, if the tail swaying is combined with no purring then it probably doesn't like what you are doing and will retaliate.
Basically if the cat is purring as well as swaying its tail it is happy, if it isn't purring i would stop what you are doing with the cat and wait for the cat to gain interest again.

The cat is either feeling menaced, or in an aggressive mood. Sometimes, the swaying of the tail may be accompanied by a low, howling from deep back in the throat.

Of course, as some respondents suggest, this may be induced by playing with the animal. Be ready for feeling it's claws, though !

I generally find it's a sign of emotion from the cat. Which emotion differs from cat to cat in my experience.

We have a cat at the moment that does this when she's happy and playing, but our last cat used to do it before lowering its ears, and hissing/snarling/generally being a right evil ****

So ini my experience, all the answers given here are right. It' just a case of finding out (maybe the hard way :o) ) what this means for your cat

That depends. When my cats do that, it usually means that they are content if they're sitting on the window sill or if they are playing it could mean they are concentrating on something, like figuring out how to pounce on the other cat or something.

the respond my pal is easy. whilst cats wag their tail sideways the are annoyed with the aid of something. they may well be aggrevated with the aid of any variety of issues that cats are aggravated with rangeing from not being fed to a war of words with yet another cat. As an factor word whilst canines wag their tails they are happy.

If it sways slowly the cat is happy; if it swishes more quickly, take cover!

It depends on the cat. It could be angry, happy sad. Look for other signs and environmental factors (ie has your enthusiastic daugher just pulled its hair, or have you just walked through the door..) All cats are different as are all humans....

The cat could be ready to attack say a fly, frog, anything, if it is in a pouncing like stage

the cat is feeling twitchy and getting ready to pounce on something or getting ready to run around the house like a maniac.
