Don't rub too hard, old glass can be brittle. Personally I would use a very fine wet and dry paper and scouring cream cleanser, or if its stubborn, white spirit or similar meths. Or sugar soap can be good but don't get it everywhere! And u must wear gloves incase the glass cracks on you.

do what churches do. find someone locally who does stained glass, they will remove the window, disassemble it, clean it, and relead it for you. also if any of the pieces are damaged, they will copy them and make it look like new.
