atheism is the main belief of the communist party which controls china. but the chinese constitution guarantees the right to believe any religion as long as you keep the public order. most chinese are deeply spiritual but it is less of an organized religion thing and more of a melding of eastern beliefs--worship of or reverence for deceased ancestors, burning incense at a temple (any temple really) to get help, setting off firecrackers to scare away the spirits. some people consider this a form of buddhism but its really more like folk religion.
on the organized religion side, christianity is the largest religion numbering somewhere around 80 million believers.
finally it's interesting to note that all of these religions were brought in from the outside world. none of them is indigenous to china. china actually was a monotheistic culture thousands of years ago with no idol worship of any kind. in the temple of heaven in beijing you see evidences of blood sacrifices and such but not a single god image like a buddha.

the state.
For so long, no religion is allowed, it's only starting to come back. Certain geographical areas have remained stronger in religion than others, like areas near Tibet the Bhuddist stronghold. Catholicism is making a comeback but still tiny. Taoism is a religion of China...possibly the biggest numbers are Muslim, but still only about 15,000,000 people out of one billion!!

Japan and China are two different countries, with different culture, etc. I can't speak for China. For Japan, it is a mixture of many, including Japan's native religion "Shinto". But it is intermixed with Buddhism as well. But religion in Japan is a mixed bag of leaves, some contradicting each other. For example: Someone being born might have a Shinto ceremony, they might have a "christian style" wedding, even though they are not Christian, and many marriages are Shinto type weddings as well, and they might have a Buddhist funeral. As you can see its a mix, fuse together. Different from China.

Atheism is the number one religion in China... Or if apathy was a religion, it would be number 1.
